OMG ITS TEH DRUMLINE JOUNRAL AGAIN ROFL LOLOLOL!!!!!11
*ahem*
Greetings one and all, I hope your off-season months were enjoyable. A new season is upon us, so I have ressurected the old drumline journal to give you all a brief heads-up regarding upcoming events.
1. The first clinic is tomorrow, May 4, at 4 pm. Graduating seniors need not come. Everyone else should be there. PLEASE, IF YOU BORROWED ANY EQUIPMENT TO PRACTICE OVER THE WINTER, BRING IT BACK SO WE HAVE IT FOT THE CLINICS.
2. Auditions are Monday, May 21,at 4:30 pm. You will sign up for a time at the end of the clinic tomorrow. Please take the audition process seriously. There are a lot of incoming freshmen and very few openings. Let's show the new kids the caliber of playing that we expect.
3. The music this year will be hard. I am going to expect more from you guys this year than I did in previous years: this is not a punishment, it's a compliment because I think you guys are ready to step up to the next level of performance. However, this is going to take some extra effort on your part, and I need everyone to take this season seriously. PRIVATE LESSONS ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED.
4. It's going to be a great season -- see you friday! |

I want to remind everyone that the MSU Day of Percussion is quickly approaching on Sunday, October 15th. I would like all of you to go to this event: it is very fun, informative, and inspiring. Go to this website to read more information, there will be a sign-up sheet at the game this Friday.

Tickets are only $5.00 so please, if you can make it, attend this event. Transportation is taken care of so all you will have to do is show up to the High School on Sunday Morning.

| Today's Sectional |
[Jul. 11th, 2006|06:24 pm] |
Today's sectional is cancelled due to rain.
PRACTICE!
Seriously though, we have only 3 more sectionals before camp, and I'd rather not be learning the show music while we are there. I'd like to know it already when we get there.

| Sectionals |
[Jul. 11th, 2006|11:00 am] |
Again, a reminder to members of pit that there is an open bass drum spot (18"). Audition this thursday at 10 at the HS.
Yesterday's sectional was a bit dissapointing. But, there is no sense dwelling on the past - let's focus positively on the future!
I cannot stress enough how important it is that all of you practice EVERY DAY. Allow me to explain the way the music learning process should work: You learn the parts and how to play them at home (or at your lessons, hint hint). That way, when we come together for a sectional, we don't have to waste any time learning parts. Instead, sectionals are for me to help put the parts together, comment on musicality, clean sections, and make changes when necessary.
Thinks of it this way: You wouldn't join a baseball team and show up to practices without knowing how to play baseball, expecting to be taught the game when you get there. You would learn how to play the game yourself or with a private teacher. The practices are for the coach to help the players function TOGETHER, as a SINGLE UNIT.
Here are a few things I should NEVER have to do at a sectional:
1. Teach the basics (Sticks out on 3, in on 1, mark time, stay at attention, etc.) 2. Say "SET" more than once per rehearsal chunk. 3. Comment on grip and technnique (a few reminders in the beginning of the season are ok, but as time goes on I shouldn't have to do this.) 4. Teach something I have already taught. 5. Teach you your part.
Things I LOVE to do at sectionals.
1. Clean snare drum rolls. 2. Polish bass drum runs until they are "milky smooth". 3. Add visuals, play with dynamics, tweak parts, etc. Im other words, HAVE FUN.
Believe it or not, I don't like being a hardass. The more you are prepared for a sectional, the less of a hardass I have to be. The less of a hardass I am, the more fun we will all have!

| A Few Notes |
[Jul. 9th, 2006|10:33 pm] |
1. Bass Drum Subsectional this Monday (July 10th), 6:00pm @ Max's house. Bring all of your show music.
2. Members of pit interested in auditioning for the open bass drum spot: the Audition will be held this Thursday, the 13th, at 10:00am at the High School. The audition panel will consist of myself, Ms. Dee, Darcy, and Max. You will be required to play Eights, Double Beat, and a portion of the opener (bass drum #1 part).
3. We have very little time left until camp -- everyone should be practicing their show music EVERY DAY for at least 30 minutes. Please do so, as it allows me to use sectionals as a time to "clean and polish" instead of teaching people their parts.
4. DO NOT come to a sectional unprepared -- this has been a problem recently. You should always bring your music for all three show tunes, the cadence, your warm-ups, pre-game/parade music, your instrument, sticks, drum cover, a pencil, etc.
5. COME TO THE SECTIONALS. This has been another big problem. If you are not coming, call your squad leader and notify them the day before, or earlier if you know earlier.

| Bay-Rama Parade |
[Jun. 25th, 2006|10:25 pm] |
Congratulations on a job well done! I was very pleased with the overall performance this afternoon. I am truely blown away by how quickly you have been able to learn some of this music.
A few comments for each section:
SNARES: Besides the obvious "cleaning" and "diddles" comments, focus on working on dynamics.
TENORS: Practice with a metronome to develop and internalize a personal sense of pulse. Also, LEARN MEASURE 28!!!
BASSES: See the above comment regarding metronomes: you have a tendancy to rush quarter notes. Also, play with more CONFIDENCE.
CYMBALS: Review the "Go tars go" section of the cadence.
GREAT START TO THE SEASON!

| Welcome Drumline! |
[Jun. 23rd, 2006|08:20 pm] |
|
Welcome to the ABHS Drumline blog. This site will be used to post important information, so check it often. Here is a link that I want you all to watch:
http://mmb.music.umich.edu/sections/drumline/videos.htm
To be specific, watch the "Cadence Series" and the "Stepshow". In particular, pay attention to technique, visuals, how "together" the drumline is, and how "disciplined" their motions are.
Sectionals have been going well, good job people. We're off to a good start.
